History

VERGOS Auctions was founded in 1989 in Athens by Petros Vergos, who was succeeded by his son, Andreas Vergos, in 2014. Today, it is one of Greece’s leading auction houses, specializing in artworks, old and rare books, manuscripts, maps, as well as philhellenic and historical items. Initially, the house focused on old and rare books, manuscripts, maps, and engravings of Greek interest, quickly gaining expertise and establishing its reputation as the foremost specialist in this field.

Milestone Sales

Over the years, VERGOS Auctions has auctioned manuscripts of exceptional historical significance and cultural interest, including the Oath of Theodoros Kolokotronis and the members of the Peloponnesian Senate of 1822, Rigas's Charter, as well as handwritten poems by our great poet Konstantinos Kavafis. World and national sales records for artworks have been achieved from time to time for renowned artists such as Yannis Tsarouchis, Konstantinos Parthenis, Takis, and Yannis Kounellis. The auction house has included thousands of works by the most esteemed Greek artists of the 19th and 20th centuries in its auctions.

Since 2000, VERGOS Auctions has successfully expanded its activities into the fields of painting and sculpture, with a focus on Greek creators. It quickly emerged as the leading auction house in Greece, capturing a significant share of the market at an international level.

In 2009, the category of philhellenic, historical, and folk items was added, receiving an excellent response from the public. Since then, the auction house has further expanded its activities to include valuable jewelry and auctions of artworks with affordable starting prices.
