How to sell

With more than 35 years of auction experience in the Arts and rare Books department, VERGOS Auctions is the oldest and largest auction House in Greece. The personalized level of services and the technical expertise available to our clients, VERGOS Auctions guarantees the safety and reliability in all stages of the auction process, from the initial evaluation to the delivery to the new owner.

Our Auction House specializes in the following fields:

  • Paintings and sculptures of Greek origin or foreign artists that draw their inspiration from Greece
  • Rare books and manuscripts
  • Maps and travel-related items
  • Engravings and photographs
  • Philhellenic and historical items

We always strive to highlight and present the items we include on our sales in the best possible way and to reach as many potential buyers as possible.

We achieve this:

  • through high resolution photography by professional photographers in the field
  • with detailed and accurate description, faithfully searching and recording their identity and history
  • by organizing an exhibition or planning periods during which potential buyers have the opportunity to see and examine them up close in places specially designed for this purpose
  • by informing our wide range of customers through our newsletters
  • by implementing a communication plan with both the domestic and the international printed press and electronic press
  • by promoting our catalogs on international online platforms (such as Invaluable) aimed at potential buyers from around the world

Our specialized staff will carefully assess your items and suggest to you the best way to sell them in order to ensure the maximum possible financial result. With this in mind, your items may be promoted through the following ways:

  • Physical auction
  • Online auction
  • Private sale
  • Online sale

The first step is to fill in the online evaluation form that you will find below on our website. Alternatively, you can send us photos, as well as any additional information you find useful, via email.

For paintings and sculptures as well as for philhellenic, historical and folklore objects, but also for jewelry contact: paintings@vergosauctions.com by sending photos of the objects and works and the signatures of the artists if any as well as dimensions without the frame for the paintings.

For books, manuscripts, maps, travel, engravings and photographs contact: books@vergosauctions.com

For books we need information about the author, the title of the book and the date of publication.

Once we receive the information, our specialized staff will study it and if deemed necessary you will be asked for further details and information or we will have to take a closer look in order to determine the best possible strategy for your item/s.

Close examination is always necessary because it is crucial for the evaluation, but also to determine the best possible strategy for your item/s. Upon receiving your item/s you will be given a receipt with our estimates. In some cases you may ask for your item/s to stay at our offices for a few more days for further examination.

Our team consists of specialized professionals with many years of experience in the field and excellent knowledge of the market. The estimate is determined by taking into account the market in combination with additional criteria, such as the artist/creator, the date, the subject, the rarity, the condition as well as the material from which an item is made.

The estimate may change (either decrease or increase) upon further examination of your item/s after you have been informed accordingly.

After careful examination, one or more of your items may not be included in our sales.

All items are insured from the moment we receive them and you receive your receipt up until 30 days after the end of the auction or sale that they will be included.

Of course you can.  If your item/s has/have not been included in any of our auction catalogues, online auctions or sales.

The final amount is the hammer price minus our commission and 24% VAT (if applicable) on the commission. You may also incur any transportation, insurance and maintenance costs.

Our seller’s commission is fixed to 15% of the hammer price.

Payment is made by wire transfer in a bank account that you are a beneficiary of and you have provided upon receipt of item/s.

Payment is made within 45 days of the end of the auction or sale, provided that it has been previously settled by the buyer.

If item/s is/are not sold, then you must arrange pick within 30 days of the end of the auction or sale. After this period, it remains in our offices at your own risk, as its insurance coverage expires.

We suggest you contact a gallery for the best promotion of your work, as VERGOS Auctions is a secondary art market organization and is not an alternative to gallery representation.
